Chemical Engineer - Visalia, California

Position Summary

The Chemical Engineer is responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. The Chemical Engineer must be able to devise new approaches to problems and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices, and company standards. The Chemical Engineer must be highly motivated, able to multi-task, and be available to travel to customer sites and interact positively with customers in assisting with trials and start-ups. We are seeking people with any or all of the interests:
1) Pilot plant R&D
2) System modeling
3) Process development

Position specification


* Design, construction, installation, and operation of laboratory, bench and/or pilot process research systems, including: Specification and procurement of process system components; process design and development of block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and process& instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) using AutoCAD and/or Visio; process modeling and simulation using CHEMCAD (or similar software); and/or thermodynamic and heat transfer studies.

* Review P&ID’s and layouts for technical correctness and for operability
* Design/Fabrication of prototypes of new systems/equipment or associated parts
* Calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of process components
* Develop equipment process and capacity specifications for instrumentation and control elements and major equipment components
* Assist in the preparation of Operations manuals including process system descriptions, review of operational &control descriptions
* Interface with other internal engineering disciplines (mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, automation, architecture, etc.) to ensure a coordinated design and complete engineering deliverables.
* Gather and maintain plant operations information in order to provide troubleshooting information and continually improve product performance
* Establish project technical requirement, including preparing and maintaining design basis documents, document list, project distribution, technical evaluation protocol and formats and project procedures
* Responsible for implementation of the technical work according to project schedules and budgets
* Prepare and maintain documentation that supports the information requirements of the Project Manager and executive management of the company. This will include engineering schedules, engineering man-hour and cost budgets, estimate-to-complete, and estimate-at-completion reports
* Plan how to move lab tests into a pilot production phase, then onto large-scale industrial processing
* Preparation of necessary technical and cost evaluations for project alternatives, including specific recommendations for approaches
* Construction support activities including responding to submitters and RFIs
* Use computer models to work out the safest and most cost-effective production methods
* Assist in developing equipment, plant, and engineering man-hour estimates for capital projects
* Participate in PHA related activities, including HAZOPs
* Participate in system start-up and commissioning
* Provide technical support to operations
* Troubleshoot operational problems

Salary: Between 70000 - 95000

Additional Details: * Must be a U.S. Citizen.
* A M.S. or B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or related field
* Minimum 3 years work experience as a process or production engineer in ethanol, distillation, evaporation, and/or separation processes or related field
* Position requires thorough knowledge of chemical or industrial process design and engineering techniques
* Experience with PHA
* Experience in reading and developing P&IDs
* Excellent speaking, writing and organizational skills
* Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite or similar software
* Ability to understand and follow machine drawings, blueprints, and process diagrams.
* Chemical engineering simulation software experience with ASPEN, ChemCAD, AutoCAD, Visio, HYSYS, Aspen Plus, or other software a plus
* Ability to perform basic statistical analyses and design experiments; experience with Minitab, JMP, or other statistical software packages preferred.
* Licensed PE or EIT is preferred
* Ability to function as part of a multi-discipline project team
